Edge of Eternity is the second title created by a relatively small company, known as the Midgar Studio. A JRPG with strong strategic aspects, mixed together with western role-playing games principles had brought both genres closer, that they were ever before. It is a game for everyone, fans of JRPG classics like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, people who love classic western RPG's like Baldur's Gate as well as for people who want to learn, why JRPG's are so popular.

Gameplay

Edge of Eternity is a JRPG with a deeply strategic combat system and elements, which you might recognize from western RPG games. While it is turn-based, it provides you with a lot of freedom in your actions. You can, for example, lure your enemies into traps or mix together certain spells and abilities, to create more powerful ones. You can take up to four characters to your party. Furthermore, the game allows you to choose between the classic turn system and the ATB -Active Time Battle - popularized by Final Fantasy series, where besides turns the gameplay introduces the charge time. When the gauge fills, the character is allowed to act. The charge time might be influenced by many external factors like spells, character stats etc.

Story

As in case of most JRPG games, Edge of Eternity puts a lot of emphasis on the storyline aspect. It takes place on the planet known as Heryon. It was once a peaceful world consisting of three powerful regions: Astrya, Dehostra, and Junor. Each realm had access to a powerful crystal, which provided them with magic powers and maintained balance. One day a massive spaceship arrived and within a moment, destroyed the capital city of Junor. 

Combined forces of Dehostra and Astrya created the Consortium lead by Reynan, the Grand General of Dehostra. The story takes place 30 years after the first attack. The war is still going on but the Consortium which was supposed to protect Heryon became as bad, as invader himself. The adventure begins with Daryon, a young student who has been convicted for illegal use of technology banned by the Consortium. Running for his life, little did he know that he is going to change the fate of the world.

Reception

The Edge of Eternity gained praise from both critics and players. They report that the game is like a mix of the best, classic JRPG games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7, while also providing gamers with new and original elements.
